The Museum

From restoration to the museum

The acquisition of this important monument in 1982 entrusted the Autonomous Region of Valle d'Aosta with the difficult and dual task of preserving and enhancing the building.
The Superintendence for Cultural Heritage and Activities proceeded to carefully analyse the characteristics of the site in order to reconcile the need for protection with that of reuse, arriving at the definition of the activities and operations necessary for the recovery of Gamba Castle.
The recovery project was drawn up by architect Aldo Piccato of Studio Piccato e Saltarelli in Aosta. The building restoration work, which began in 2002 and was completed in 2005, was followed by the museum layout, designed by architects Roberto Pagliero and Salvatore Simonetti of Turin.
Rosanna Maggio Serra prepared, in collaboration with the regional offices and architects, the thematic groupings of the collection, the ordering of the works, the elaboration of the scientific contents and the route to be followed.

The Gamba Castle exhibition itinerary winds through 13 rooms over the three floors of the building and presents a selection - curated by Rosanna Maggio Serra - of 150 works including paintings, sculptures, installations, graphic and photographic collections, ranging from the 19th century to the present day. In addition to the 13 rooms for the permanent exhibition, the museum includes rooms for temporary exhibitions and educational activities, and an ultra-modern storage room that can be visited on request.
